Have you tried this colorful berry in your smoothies yet? Fresh cranberries are full of potential beyond the Thanksgiving table rather than an afterthought for our left over turkey sandwiches. It is reported that the cranberry is an under-consumed fruit in the United States. That’s too bad because these nutritional powerhouses are anti – inflammatory and high in antioxidants, packing in more than other “superfoods” like spinach and blueberries.
It is rarely consumed fresh due to is astringent tart taste. For these reasons, we find them in our grocery stores canned, jellied or dried and stripped of its nutritional value. Fortunately, we can coach our palates to enjoy its unique taste in a smoothie bowl beyond the sugary sauces and sweet dried varieties. Once you go fresh you’ll never look at a dried cranberry as a food group again. I added in Crucial Four’s mbreakfast to my bowl to boost the nutritional value with its pleasant cacao taste. This is a colorful and flavorful way to enjoy cranberries allowing us to change up our nutrients with the changing seasons.
Cranberry Smoothie Benefits
These tart brightly colored gems are a great source of vitamin C to help strengthen your immune system during the colder months to prevent the seasonal colds and flu. They are also a great source of fiber, which aids in proper digestive function which is another good reason to start your day with them in your smoothie. Cranberries are known to have detoxifying properties that help the body eliminate toxins and relieve water retention and bloating. One of the most challenging nutrients to get into our diets is potassium. We lose this vital mineral under any stress plus even the most well-intentioned health gurus rarely make the daily requirements of 4700mg. Cranberries have a good source of potassium that can help our dietary goals for better energy metabolism, to balance hypertension and overall need for proper cell function.
It appears that their high levels of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins help reduce the adhesion of certain bacteria to urinary tract walls, which in turn can help to reduce the incidence of UTI’s.

I always recommend to clients the importance of trying something new into their diet. When we eat the same foods all the time we don’t exposed our bodies to enough nutrition and by rotating our diets we can get the most out our foods. Introduce your palates to cranberries and mbreakfast – try something new!
